Spring Education & Administration Intern

End Date: May 27, 2026

Hours per week: 12 (14 weeks)

Smack Mellon is a nonprofit arts organization located in Dumbo, Brooklyn. Smack Mellon's mission is to nurture and support emerging, under-recognized mid-career, and women artists in the creation and exhibition of new work, by providing exhibition opportunities, studio workspace, and access to equipment and technical assistance for the realization of ambitious projects. We do this through our Exhibition Program, Artist Studio Program, and Art Ready, our teen mentorship program.

Internship Description

Smack Mellon is currently seeking applications for a Spring Education & Administration Intern. We offer the unique opportunity to learn about running a nonprofit organization with a gallery, artist residency program, and education program serving local teens. Because we are a small organization, interns will have the chance to learn through direct contact with the Executive Director, Curator & Director of Exhibitions, Programs & Events Manager, and artists.

This internship lasts 14 weeks, with 12 hours of work per week, excluding holiday breaks. The intern will work with Smack Mellon staff on a variety of projects related to programming—with an emphasis on helping with Smack Mellon’s teen art mentorship program, Art Ready. Responsibilities will include conducting studio visits with Art Ready mentors and students, maintaining the Art Ready blog, drafting social media posts for Art Ready, and assist with curating the Art Ready final exhibition with the Smack Mellon Programs & Events Manager. Other responsibilities include photo-documenting Art Ready visits as well as other public events such as open studios and exhibition openings. Interns must be available to work in-person Wednesdays from 3:30-6:30pm, excluding holidays. The schedule is otherwise flexible Wednesdays through Sundays.

Responsibilities

-Assisting our teen art mentorship program, Art Ready, by conducting studio visits with mentors and students, writing posts for the Art Ready blog, drafting social media posts, and maintaining the Art Ready photo library.
-Assisting with Art Ready final exhibition curation and install.
-Assisting with exhibition planning, research, and archiving.
-General office administration, including updating our website, press kits, and minor design projects.
-Photographing & Assisting with public events.

Qualifications

Applicants should be passionate about the arts and excited to learn about art nonprofits. Smack Mellon is looking for a candidate that is self-motivated, organized, detail-oriented, energetic, and hardworking with excellent written and communication skills. Previous knowledge or experience working with: various social media platforms, Mac OS, Google Drive programs, Microsoft Word and Excel, Adobe suite, Square, and Wordpress is a plus.

Application Deadline: January 18, 2026 at 11:59pm. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis.

This internship is unpaid. However, interns can receive academic credit for participation in this internship.
